Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time
Compensation: $25/hr
Gizuá Market is looking for a dependable, customer-focused Store Team Leader to help lead day-to-day store operations and create a welcoming, well-organized shopping experience for our customers.
This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who enjoys working with people, takes pride in maintaining high standards, and is comfortable supporting and guiding a small retail team. The Store Team Leader will work closely with management to ensure the store operates safely, efficiently and consistently while providing excellent service to the community.
Because Gizuá Market also offers prepared and ready-to-eat food items, the successful candidate should have basic culinary skills and practical food-preparation experience, together with appropriate food-safety certification.
The Role
As Store Team Leader, you will provide day-to-day leadership on the store floor, support employees during their shifts and help ensure that operational standards are maintained. You will be expected to lead by example, taking pride in the workplace — serving customers, stocking shelves, maintaining the store, supporting food preparation, guiding staff and responding to issues as they arise.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership
- Provide day-to-day direction and support to store employees during assigned shifts.
- Help create a positive, respectful and accountable workplace.
- Support the onboarding and training of new employees.
- Coach team members on customer service, food safety, store procedures and performance expectations.
- Help organize daily priorities and ensure assigned tasks are completed.
- Escalate significant staffing, performance or operational issues to management when required.
- Support shift coverage and help respond to unexpected staffing requirements.
Customer Service
- Provide friendly, professional and consistent customer service.
- Lead by example in creating a welcoming environment for customers and community members.
- Assist with customer questions, concerns and complaints.
- Resolve routine customer-service issues and escalate more significant matters when appropriate
Store Operations
- Support the opening and closing of the store in accordance with established procedures.
- Ensure shelves, coolers, displays and promotional areas are clean, stocked and appropriately presented.
- Receive, organize and rotate merchandise.
- Monitor product availability and identify replenishment requirements.
- Support inventory counts, stock control and loss-prevention practices.
- Ensure product pricing, signage and displays are accurate and current.
- Monitor product expiry dates and ensure appropriate stock rotation.
- Help maintain clean, safe and organized sales, storage, food-preparation and staff areas.
- Complete assigned operational checklists and records.
Food Preparation and Food Service
- Assist with the preparation of simple fresh, hot, grab-and-go and ready-to-eat food items.
- Follow established recipes, preparation methods, portioning and presentation standards.
- Support daily food preparation and service requirements based on customer demand.
- Ensure food is stored, prepared, displayed and served safely.
- Monitor food temperatures, labelling, expiry dates and stock rotation.
- Maintain clean and sanitary food-preparation areas, equipment and utensils.
- Support proper opening, closing and cleaning procedures for food-service areas.
- Help minimize food waste through appropriate preparation, rotation and inventory practices.
- Reinforce safe food-handling practices with other team members.
Cash Handling and Point of Sale
- Operate the point-of-sale system accurately.
- Support cashouts, till reconciliation and other cash-handling procedures.
- Respond to routine POS issues and support team members when assistance is required.
- Ensure established cash-control and security procedures are followed.
Health, Safety and Compliance
- Promote a safe workplace and ensure employees follow established health and safety procedures.
- Identify hazards and report or address concerns promptly.
- Support incident reporting and emergency procedures where required.
- Ensure food-handling, sanitation and workplace requirements are followed.
- Maintain required food-safety records and checklists.
- Follow all Gizuá Market and yáqʷa policies and procedures.
What We Are Looking For
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Previous retail, grocery, convenience-store, hospitality or customer-service experience.
- Previous supervisory, shift-lead or team-lead experience preferred.
- Basic culinary and food-preparation skills.
- Experience preparing simple fresh, hot or grab-and-go food products.
- Valid FOODSAFE Level 1 certification, or an equivalent food-safety certification recognized in British Columbia considered an asset.
- Understanding of safe food handling, storage, temperature control, sanitation and cross-contamination prevention.
- Strong customer-service skills.
- The ability to provide direction to others in a respectful and constructive manner.

- Knowledge of the Haisla community and local area is considered an asset.
- First Aid certification and additional culinary, hospitality or retail training are considered assets.
Physical Requirements
This is an active retail and food-service position. Team Leaders must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, reach and perform repetitive tasks.
- Safely lift and move merchandise, food products and supplies.
- Work safely around food-service equipment.
- Work in refrigerated, storage and food-preparation areas as required.

Schedule
This position requires flexibility to work a retail schedule, which may include days, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays. Availability requirements and the regular work schedule will be discussed during the recruitment process.
