Gizuá Market Update – September 2025
Gizuá Market & Restaurant Update

Gizuá Market continued the tradition this summer of providing a spot for meets, eats and treats. The Slush Puppy and Fro Yo machines were working overtime to help us cool down on some pretty hot days, and our team continued to add new and exciting products to meet our customers’ needs.
As the sun sets on another great summer, and with a new season upon us, we wanted to share an update on our operations and plans for the future.
We recognize some of these changes couldn’t come soon enough and so we thank you for your patience as we navigate some of these challenges.
Thank you for your continued patronage of Gizuá – today and every day.

Gizuá Market Update – September, 2025
- Hiring of New Employees – You may have seen postings for Store Supervisor and Casual Employees. Currently, we’re hiring a Business Operations Manager to oversee operations and will prioritize this role before proceeding with other interviews. During this time, we will have one employee managing the store so unfortunately the kitchen will be temporarily closed. We look forward to starting interviews soon!
- Tax-Free Cigarette Sales – Our recent application to sell tax-free cigarettes was denied by the government. We understand the impact this has on our community and are actively working with our team to explore all available options to mitigate this decision. In the meantime, you can still purchase tax-free tobacco products at the Gas Bar.
- Restaurant Lease Update – We are still searching for the perfect operator for a new restaurant at Gizuá. Unfortunately, the preferred operator we were working with has decided to step away from the opportunity. If you or someone you know is interested, please check out the opportunity here.
- Construction Progress – We’re working closely with our construction team to phase renovations at Gizuá, with a primary focus on updating the market side first. We’re committed to keeping the space vibrant and welcoming for our community. You can check out our plans here.
Background
The Sunrise General Store has had a long and rich history in x̄á’isla Village for decades. As part of yáqʷa Economic Development’s acquisition and management of the building, our goal has been to sustainably transform the store and restaurant spaces to offer modern and welcoming amenities for our community and visitors.
Since the building was acquired in 2024, here’s what we’ve done:
- Rebranded the Sunrise General Store to Gizuá Market
- Launched a call for artists to design a ne w logo for the Market
- Launched a search for a new operator for the restaurant space
- Worked with an architect, along with mechanical, electrical, structural and interior designers to develop a concept for renovations to the restaurant and market spaces
- Selecting a General Contractor to undertake renovations
